AODA Signage Requirements — What Ontario Businesses Must Display

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and its Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (O. Reg. 191/11) require Ontario businesses to provide accessible signage for people with disabilities. As of January 1, 2025, ALL Ontario organizations must comply.

Sign TypeAODA RequirementWho Needs It
Room IdentificationTactile + Braille characters, 4.8mm min raised heightAll public buildings
Washroom SignsGender-neutral pictograms with Braille and tactile textAll public and workplace washrooms
Wayfinding SignsHigh contrast (70% minimum), sans-serif fontsMulti-storey buildings, hospitals, malls
Accessible EntranceInternational Symbol of Access (ISA)All buildings with accessible entries
Elevator Floor IndicatorsTactile + Braille floor numbers on elevator jambsAll elevators in public buildings
ParkingISA signage at accessible parking spacesAll parking facilities

Penalties for Non-Compliance

The Accessibility Directorate of Ontario can issue penalties up to $100,000/day for individuals and $200,000/day for corporations. AODA compliance audits are becoming more frequent — don't wait for a complaint.

Common AODA Signage Mistakes

  • Printed Braille instead of raised dots — Braille must be physically raised
  • Wrong contrast ratio — minimum 70% luminance contrast required
  • Signs mounted too high — tactile signs at 1,200–1,500 mm from floor
  • Missing elevator indicators — each floor needs tactile + Braille on door jamb
