When Is Boat Name Lettering Required?
Large Vessel Registration (Required)
Vessels over 15 gross tonnage OR commercial vessels must be registered under the Canada Shipping Act. Registered vessels MUST display:
- ✓ Vessel name on both bows and stern
- ✓ Port of registry on the stern
- ✓ Official number inside the hull
- ✓ Letters minimum 100mm (4") on the bow, 75mm (3") on the stern
Pleasure Craft (Optional but Recommended)
Pleasure craft under 15 GT with a PCL don't legally need a boat name. But most owners want one for:

- ✓ SAR (search and rescue) identification
- ✓ Insurance documentation
- ✓ Pride of ownership
