Every personal watercraft (PWC) in Canada — including jet skis, Sea-Doos, and WaveRunners — must display its Pleasure Craft Licence (PCL) number. Transport Canada requires minimum 76mm (3") block letters in a contrasting colour on both sides of the hull.
PWC Licence Number Requirements
Size
Minimum 76mm (3") tall block letters. Must be a single colour that contrasts with hull colour. Sans-serif font only.
Placement
Both sides of the bow or forward quarter. Must be visible at 100 metres. Above the waterline when the PWC is at rest.
Format
PCL number format: XX 1234 YY (province code + digits + check letters). Must match your Pleasure Craft Licence exactly.
Do Jet Skis Need Registration Numbers?
Yes. Under the Canada Shipping Act and Small Vessel Regulations, ALL personal watercraft with motors (including electric) must have a valid Pleasure Craft Licence and display the PCL number on both sides of the hull.
This applies to all jet skis, Sea-Doos, WaveRunners, stand-up PWCs, and electric foils. The only exceptions are human-powered craft (canoes, kayaks, paddleboards) and vessels under 7.5 kW (10 HP) used exclusively in non-navigable waters.
