DOT Number Canada — Requirements, Cost & How to Apply

Every Canadian carrier crossing into the United States needs a USDOT number. It is free to obtain, takes about 20 minutes to apply online, and must be displayed on both sides of your power unit. Here is the complete process.

What Is a USDOT Number?

A USDOT number is your carrier's unique identifier in the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) system. It tracks your safety record, inspections, compliance reviews, crash data, and insurance status. The number follows the format USDOT XXXXXXX (7-8 digits). Every commercial vehicle operating in the US with a GVWR over 10,001 lbs (4,536 kg) must have one.

How Much Does a DOT Number Cost?

The USDOT number itself is free — there is no fee to register with FMCSA. However, if you need MC (Motor Carrier) operating authority for for-hire operations, the filing fee is $300 USD. Additional costs include BOC-3 process agent designation ($30-$100 USD) and insurance meeting FMCSA minimums ($750,000 liability for general freight, $5,000,000 for hazmat). Vehicle marking (USDOT decals) costs $29.99-$89.99 depending on the package.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Register online through the FMCSA Unified Registration System at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. Select 'Foreign Motor Carrier' as your carrier type. Provide your Canadian business information, vehicle details, commodities transported, and operational scope. Processing takes 1-3 business days. Once approved, your USDOT number is active immediately — mark your vehicles before your first US trip.

USDOT Marking Requirements

Under 49 CFR 390.21, your USDOT number must be permanently displayed on both sides of the power unit. Minimum 2-inch (50 mm) letter height. Contrasting colour to the vehicle surface. Must be legible from 50 feet (15 metres) during daylight. Include your legal carrier name and MC number (if applicable).

Biennial Update Requirement

You must update your USDOT registration every two years, even if nothing has changed. Failure to complete the biennial update results in deactivation of your USDOT number. Check your update due date on the FMCSA SAFER system. You can update online at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.

Canadian + US Dual Requirements

Canadian carriers need BOTH Canadian and US markings. An Ontario carrier needs: CVOR number, owner name, GVW (Canadian side) PLUS USDOT number, MC number, carrier name (US side). Our Cross-Border Trucking Kit includes all markings for both jurisdictions.
